Tuscan International Youth Orchestra

FOG (Festival Orchestre Giovanili) is pleased to announce a brand new project orchestra for young musicians: the Tuscan International Youth Orchestra (TIYO).
Musicians aged between 18-32yrs from all around the world are invited to participate in the residential orchestra and applications are encouraged from conservatoire, school and university students of orchestral musical instruments. TIYO will consist of one week of intense sectional and tutti rehearsals in the beautiful medieval Tuscan town of Cortona, with renowned European conductors and tutors. The piece to be studied is Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto, the course will culminate in a three-day concert tour in the area as part of local festivals (including the International Festival of European Youth Orchestras opening concert on 2nd July in Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
TIYO will provide half-board accommodation to all of its members. Music will be provided. Please bring your own music stands and concert dress (black).
Venue
The course will be based in the beautiful medieval town of Cortona (famous also as the location for ‘Under the Tuscan Sun’). Rehearsals will take place in the historic Teatro Signorelli in the town centre (cortona - teatro signorelli).
Cortona is a visitor’s haven, with plentiful shops, bars, restaurants and culture in stunning surroundings, situated very close to Perugia, Assisi, Siena and Arezzo.
Arrival
All students must cover their own travel expenses to Cortona and arrive at the venue (Teatro dei Signorelli) by 5pm on Friday, 25th June. Nearest airports are Perugia (Ryan Air), Florence and Rome; from here trains are frequent to Cortona-Camucia Station.
Applications
Applicants are requested to fill in the attached application form and a recent recording of your playing. The deadline for application is 10th April 2010. The orchestra members will be announced on 30th April 2010.

Conductor Daniele Giorgi
Composer, conductor and violinist, born in Florence in 1970.
Since 1998 Giorgi has led the string ensemble “OrtEnsemble”, and in 1999 was nominated leader of ORT (Orchestra Regionale della Toscana).
Giorgi has taught violin at the Girolamo Frescobaldi conservatoire of Ferrara and Niccolò Paganini of Genova. He studied conducting with Piero Bellugi (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) and Isaac Karabtchevsky. Soloists he has collaborated with include Yuri Bashmet, Stanislav Bunin, Roberto Cappello, Umberto Clerici, Roberto Cominati, Ilya Grubert, Igor Oistrakh, Marco Rizzi, Alexander Starkman, Viktor Tetriakov, Edoardo Zosi. In 2004 he was nominated principal conductor of the “Orchestra Pistoiese Promusica” and has since regularly conducted the Orchestra di Roma e del Lazio and the Orchestra Haydn di Trento e Bolzano. Throughout 2006 he conducted ORT for a special programme entirely dedicated to Mozart. Giorgi has worked both as violinist and conductor with major Italian orchestras and has dedicated much of his career to tutoring young musicians and creating new youth ensembles.
